This year, Austrians will receive just over 100 euros per child between the ages of 6 and 15 as early as August.
Exercise books, pencils, compasses, calculators, maybe even a special notepad or a new school bag: the expenses that parents are confronted with at the start of school are beyond the means of many a household budget. That’s why the “Schulstartgeld” is such a necessary support.
Until now, however, it was only paid into the account in September, when the school year in eastern Austria is usually already a few days old. This year, it will be paid out in August for the first time – a long-standing demand of the family associations has thus been implemented.
“The school start money is a tried and tested instrument, alongside the numerous other family benefits, with which we support children and their families in starting school as smoothly as possible. Starting this year, the school start allowance will also be paid out as early as August, instead of September as before, so that parents can get everything they need for their children early on,” explains Family Minister Susanne Raab.
The school starts with 105,80 euro and gives it to each school-obligatory child aged 6 to 15. Together with family support, automatically and bureaucratically, the account is transferred. The federal government distributes around 95 million euros for this purpose. Since the beginning of the year, the school start allowance has also been automatically adjusted annually for inflation and thus increased. Nine hundred thousand children and their families throughout Austria benefit from the school start allowance.
“As Minister for Family Affairs, but also as a mother, it is particularly important to me that we put families at the center of our policies, because they are the mainstay of our society. In recent months, we have achieved really great things to support families in Austria, such as the kindergarten billion,” concludes the Minister.
